A Breakdown of Different Methods of Installing Extensions – Part 3: Skin Weft, Bonded & Quick Weave

In the first article in this series we looked at The Sew-In And Tape-In Methods and in part 2 we looked at The Glue-In, Fusion And Clip-In Methods, in this article we look at 3 other methods of installing hair extensions.

There are lots of different techniques used to install extensions and every year there seems to be yet another new method. Techniques may vary in name but differ only very slightly in their application.

It can get confusing because you may find that stylists in different parts of the country will refer to a similar technique with different names. When requesting a particular style, it is easier to get your point across by describing what you want rather than the name that you know it by!

Sew in’s are undeniably the most popular method used for attaching weaves but here are 3 other methods for attaching wefted hair to your own:

Skin weft weave

Skin wefts can also be called the tape in method. They are the most undetectable ways of adding extensions to your own hair. With this method, your own hair has to be the same texture as the extensions being installed.

Instead of the usual machine or hand tied wefts that other extensions use, with skin wefts, hair is attached to a piece of colored double sided tape. The tape is attached near the roots of your own hair using a liquid hair adhesive or some lace wig tape. Since the side of the tape that is exposed is the same color as your scalp, it remains very natural looking.

The use of heat near the glue bond is not advised as it would cause the glue to melt and the extensions would slip.

Bonded Extensions

These are pretty easy to install. Your own hair texture would have to be similar to the extensions you are installing. The wefts are attached in pieces close to the roots of you hair using a special hair adhesive.

With bonded extensions you have to be pretty careful when washing them to avoid the wefts slipping. Again, with this technique the use of heat near the glue bond is not advised.

Quick Weave

This style is very similar to a bonded weave but differs in that none of your own hair is left out. Your own hair is wrapped around your head using a heavy gel like product called a sealant which protects your own hair from the adhesive which is applied on top. Wefts are then glued directly onto your wrapped hair after the gel has dried solid.

The major downside to quick weaves is that they cannot be washed for the entire duration that they are worn. Water washes away the sealant and glue so the installs usually don’t last very long.

Quick weaves can be damaging to your hair in the long run and so you may want to consider other methods of applying extensions to your hair.

Note: With all the above methods, it is prudent to check that you are not allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients in hair glue prior to installation. Removal of the extensions should only be done by a qualified stylist to avoid excessive breakage of your own hair.

What’s so unique about hair extensions is that there are so many installation options available. Depending on your choice of installation, you have quite a few choices like the glue—in weave method, sew-in method and clip-in method, just to name a few. All of these methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. And before you make a decision on which installation method you’ll use, you’ll want to first take into account your personal preferences based upon your lifestyle. For example, if you like to change your hairstyle often and don’t have a lot of time on your hands, perhaps the glue-in weave method is the best method for you because it’s quick and easy to do. And regardless of whether you choose to do it yourself or use a salon stylist, it’s still one of the quickest ways to install a weave. However, right now I’d like to go into a bit more detail into the various methods available for weave installation.

There are many installation methods available, but here are the most popular ones commonly used today:

Braid-in/Sew-in Weave Method Using Hair Wefts – This method involves sectioning the hair into equal sections and corn-rowing the hair from the front of the hairline all the way to the back of the neck. Some hair may be left out at the front along the hairline and around the neck about an inch worth to hide the wefts and allow for ponytail styles. With hair left out the weave blends nicely with your own hair making it less detectable and giving you more versatility.

The weft hair extension is sewn into the braid using a curved needle with thread color close to your natural hair color, often black. Starting at the back and then working your way up. Once you arrive at the top, the weft is cut and glued at the end of the weft to stop any fraying hair and to seal the ends. The weave needle continues around and under the braid in continuous loops pulling the string with the hair so that it is tightly tied along the cornrow. A double knot is then used to secure the hair once each braid is completed. This method is better than the glue-in weave method as it allows the hair and scalp to breathe without any chemical substance, making it a healthier choice.

Tape in Hair Extensions – The hair tape method of extensions is a quick process that takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Many women like this method because it does not keep them glued to a salon chair for hours at a time. This tape-in hair extension is very versatile and designed with a clear thin strip of adhesive tape on the edge of the hair extensions. This tape strip allows the hair to bond neatly and discreetly to your natural hair. Many women have turned to this method simply because it keeps your extensions looking natural and undetectable, while allowing you to change styles quickly and easily!

Caution: You must note that if you do decide to opt for the tape-in hair extensions, your application method is critical to the longevity and to the overall health of your hair once you decide to take them down. Always remember to only use about ¼ inch hair parts between each row of extensions that you apply. This is extremely important because if you apply the tape to too much of your hair, your extension will not be snug enough, causing it to fall out. Also if you attach too little hair, this could be detrimental to your hair’s health simply because the extra weight of the hair can cause extreme breakage and damage to your hair. So, using a quarter of an inch parting is best.

The whole point of hair extensions is to make them appear as if they are growing out of your own head. The more natural your extensions look the better you will feel about them and the more confident you will be as you wear them for an extended period of time.

A bad weave is easy to spot, it looks as if it is separated from your own natural hair, the tracks show, and the quality of the hair is immediately diminished because we can’t get over how the install appears. Here are four simple tips you can use that will keep your hair looking as natural as possible fooling everyone around you including the person in the mirror!

1.Get bangs: The hardest part of a full head of weave to hide is the hair line and rocking bangs would certainly do the trick when effectively hiding the hair line. Bangs come in a variety of styles and picking the right one depends on the shape of your face and what you like. Try side swept bangs for a sexy sultry look, or blunt bangs for more of an edgy style. Tip: if your hair is longer and you want to create your own bangs just section off an area of your hair closer to the front of your head and trim the hair shorter than the rest of your extensions. Shape the bangs to ensure that they look as natural as possible.

2.Don’t be afraid to alter your weave: Shape your hair to flatter your face this includes cutting the hair in layers or in a manner that fits the shape of your face. Installing the hair straight across the forehead is not very natural, rounder hair lines are always more preferred.

3.Use a top closure hair piece – Top closures are pretty nifty at covering your braids or anything you may need to cover that forms the base of your hair extensions. The closure has the ability to give you parting space and mimics whatever you would do naturally with your own hair.

4.Do a partial weave – While for some this may not be a great idea because they want the benefit of a full weave, for others this maybe just what the doctor ordered. A partial weave essentially means that your start your weave from the middle or back of the head leaving your entire crown area untouched. The benefits include having your own hair line and not worrying about how to match it, having enough hair out to make side parts or bangs that flatter your face. Using fewer extensions almost guarantees that your hair will look more natural especially if you are able to match the extension hair perfectly in the back to your leave out in the front.

How To Define Curls In Kinky Curly Or Deep Wave Hair Extensions

I’ve written before about the fact that black women are wearing more curly than straight weaves in the last couple of years. I’m sure that the natural hair movement is the major motivating factor in this recent trend.

As more and more women start to wear their natural hair or use weaves to transition, the popularity of curly weaves as a protective styling option will only increase.

So now that you’ve installed some gorgeous curly hair extensions, you have probably noticed that the hair clearly does not behave much like your straight hair. It’s a common conundrum for many women who have either always had their hair relaxed straight or always wear straight weaves, they just don’t know how to care for curly hair!

Defining Curls
Defining the curls in your hair extensions is pretty easy, all you have to decide is if you want big high volume hair or you want ultra defined, low volume hair with little to no frizz.

High volume hair is for those who are wild at heart and love being the center of attention, because with hair like that, you will get it whether you like it or not! Very defined low volume styles are probably more suitable for the office, school or any activity where big hair would be too much of an inconvenience to you. Big Hair
Curly hair has a tendency to ‘grow bigger’ especially in humid weather. Big hair tends to be less defined and almost always involves a certain amount of frizz. If you have installed kinky curly or deep wave hair extensions, and you want to big hair, then simply shampoo and condition the hair extensions. Detangle with a wide tooth comb whilst the hair is still wet and pat dry with a turbie twist towel. Without applying any product, dry the hair using a hair dryer with diffuser attachment. You will notice that the volume of the hair will increase substantially once fully dry.

To get even bigger hair, separate the curls a bit with your fingers, some frizz will be created while you separate but this just adds to the appeal of the style. Be warned, this style is not for the faint hearted!

Low Volume Hair
If you want to switch things up and opt for an ultra defined look with much less body, you can achieve this pretty easily too. Again wash and condition your hair extensions detangling them with the comb while the hair is wet and rinse throughly.

With the hair still damp, apply a small amount of leave in conditioner and follow up with a generous amount of a heavy gel product. Most ‘wet look’ gels or curl definining products will work pretty well. Rake the gel through the curls with your fingers making sure to coat every strand.

You can either allow your hair to air dry for the best results or else you can dry your hair with a hair dryer with diffuser attachment. Do not touch the curls as they dry to avoid getting any frizz. Once the hair is completely dry, scrunch the curls to get rid of any ‘crunch’ that the gel may have left behind. You will now have a head of gorgeous shiny and defined curls!

The natural hair movement is with us and in full swing. Many black women these days are rediscovering their natural hair textures by stopping the use of chemical relaxers and this is a wonderful thing.

Even with all the enthusiasm for natural hair at the moment, each individual woman’s quest for long hair has not been diminished. Unfortunately for some they have found that going natural alone does not automatically equate to tangible length gains.

Remember, the more hair you leave out, the more manipulation that hair will get which increases chances of breakage. You need very little hair to cover the tracks when installing the weave.

Choose textures as close your own as possible – If you have kinky curly 3c, 4a or 4b textures that cannot be straightened effectively with the use of roller sets, wearing dead straight extensions and leaving out hair to blend is a mistake. Because of black hair’s tendency to revert in the presence of humidity you would have to flat iron your hair daily to keep your install looking seamless. Go for deep wave and kinky curly hair textures that are easier to blend with your hair. If you absolute must wear straight extensions, invest in a good humidity blocking product that will mean that you only have to flat iron your leave out hair once a week.

Keep the weave in for a maximum of 6 weeks at a time – Natural black hair has a tendency to matt easily which is why it’s the ideal hair texture for creating dreadlocks. Keeping your weave in for extended periods of time leads to serious matting, which will mean excessive breakage while detangling your hair after you take out the weave. Some of the matting can be so bad that only a pair of scissors can solve the problem. It would be heartbreaking to see all your extra growth lost to breakage.

Avoid synthetic hair extensions – Sythetic hair extensions are more drying than natural hair extensions. This is because synthetic hair strips moisture from your own strands and does not have the same ability as human hair to hold on to moisturizing oils. Side Parting Extraordinaire

This hot trend is a super stylised look, so it should only be tackled by those with a penchant for turning heads.
